Nepal: the one flag that is not a rectangle

Every other national flag on earth is a rectangle. Nepal's is not. It is a double pennon, two stacked crimson triangles with a blue border, carrying a white moon on the upper section and a white sun on the lower one, and it is taller than it is wide. The current design was adopted in December 1962, and Nepal's constitution specifies it with a geometric construction, a sequence of compass-and-straightedge steps rather than a set of measurements.

For a quiz player this is the single easiest point in the Asian pool, and it is worth banking deliberately. Recognising it costs no colour memory at all, because the silhouette alone is unique among every flag in the game.

The families that make Asia hard

Most of the difficulty in an Asia-only round comes from four groups where several countries share a visual idea and differ only in the detail.

• Crescent and star: Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Singapore all use one. Separate them by field colour and by what sits beside the crescent, a single star on Turkey, an eight-pointed star on Azerbaijan's blue, red and green bands, twelve small stars on Uzbekistan.
• A single disc or star on a plain field: Japan's red disc on white, Bangladesh's red disc on green, Vietnam's one gold star on red, China's one large star with four smaller ones. Bangladesh's disc sits slightly toward the hoist so that it looks centred when the flag is flying, which is a useful tell in a still image.
• Two-band bicolours: Indonesia is red over white. Poland is white over red, the exact inversion, and it lives in the Europe pool, so on this page you are safe from that particular trap. Within Asia the risk is confusing Indonesia with Singapore, which adds a crescent and five stars in the canton.
• Dense central emblems: Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan carry detailed devices that are hard to read at small sizes. Cambodia's is the standout, the only national flag whose central charge is a building, the temple of Angkor Wat.

The Malaysia and United States mix-up

Malaysia's flag is the one that catches confident players. It carries fourteen alternating red and white horizontal stripes with a blue canton in the upper hoist, which is close enough to the flag of the United States that a quick glance registers the wrong country entirely. The canton is the tell: Malaysia puts a gold crescent and a fourteen-point star there rather than a field of stars. The number fourteen is not arbitrary, it stands for the thirteen states plus the federal territories, and the design in its current form dates from 1963.

The United States sits in the North America pool rather than this one, so an Asia-scoped round can never actually offer both as options in the same question. That makes this page a good place to fix the distinction before you meet both on the unscoped Flag Quiz, where they can appear together.

How a round works here

Each Asia Flag Quiz session is ten rounds. Every round shows one real national flag from the 46-entry Asian pool and four country names, all four taken from that same pool and shuffled fresh so the answer position stays unpredictable. A correct pick extends your streak and adds to your score; a miss resets the streak without ending the session, so you always play all ten questions and see a full result.

The results screen gives your score, your accuracy as a percentage, and a review list of everything you missed with the correct country beside it. Where the continent boundary falls

WorldQuizr assigns one continent per country, so countries that straddle a boundary sit in exactly one pool. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are all classified as Asian here, which is why they appear in this quiz and in the Asia Map Quiz rather than in the Europe Flag Quiz. Russia goes the other way and sits in Europe, even though most of its territory is east of the Urals. Egypt sits in Africa.

One entry behaves differently between the two Asian modes. Singapore has a flag and a capital in the dataset and is fully playable here, but the world map WorldQuizr draws on carries no Singaporean shape, so the Asia Map Quiz asks for 45 countries rather than 46. That is the only difference between the two pools, and it is a limit of the map geometry rather than a deliberate exclusion.
